History
A Blooming Success
In 1950 Ed Meyer, Jr. and Gayle Meyer purchased a one-room house and four acres of land on 47th Street in Moline, Illinois. The first items sold in the landscape business were wreaths and grave blankets at Christmas for the cemetery across the street from the house. The business was called Meyer’s Flower Farm.
After renovating the house, the business was operated out of the kitchen and the showroom out of the garage. The year was 1951. Items sold were rose bushes, tulip bulbs and iris. This later blossomed into a small landscape and nursery business.
In 1974 a separate office and warehouse was built on another part of the ground. An additional 16 acres were acquired in the area on which to grow and display nursery stock. The name became Meyer’s Tree Farm.
In the mid 1970’s, Jack and Kurt Meyer graduated from the University of Illinois with majors in horticulture and entered the family business. Soon after a 140 acre farm in the Taylor Ridge area was purchased for the purpose of growing nursery stock for the growing landscape business.
In August of 1987, Ed Meyer married Janet Carlson. She has a passion for plants and was a wonderful salesperson. This made her a natural fit with the family business. In 1988 the Moline office expanded in 1988 to include six landscape designers and an irrigation manager. An additional farm in the Taylor Ridge area was acquired in 1992.
Continuing Growth
The Moline location was enlarged and remodeled in 1999 to create additional offices and conference rooms. The Garden Center were redesigned to create individual display areas for nursery stock and garden items. The name was changed to Meyer Landscape & Design Inc. The company continues to offer the community complete landscape design/installation, irrigation design/installation, lighting design/installation and cash and carry services for all homes, businesses and public grounds in the area.
